MERCAZ USA Newsletter — Spring 2009Funds For Mumbai Masorti Synagogues While attention has rightly been focused on the rebuilding of the Chabad House in Mumbai that was brutally attacked by terrorists at the end of last year, the shock of that attack has shaken all of Mumbai's Jewish institutions, including its two Conservative/Masorti congregations. Now, in the wake of the terrorist attacks, Masorti Olami - World Council of Conservative/Masorti Synagogues is undertaking a campaign to fund new security systems for all of the country's Masorti congregations: Tiphereth Israel Synagogue and Shaar Hashamayim Synagogue in Mumbai and those in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Alibaug. Contributions for this campaign should be sent to World Council of Conservative Synagogues, 3080 Broadway, New York, NY, 10027. Please mark it for the Masorti India Fund. Donations may also be made online through Network for Good, www.networkforgood.org (charity name: World Council of Synagogues - State: New York). Commenting on a recent article that appeared in the Jerusalem Report that asserted that most Indian Jews identify with either Orthodox or Reform Judaism, Mr. Ralphy Jhirad, Chairman of Masorti India, noted that not only are there currently a half dozen Masorti synagogues in India but "[since] Masorti Judaism offers a blend of traditional and modern values, practiced in a spirit of tolerance, [many] more congregations are looking forward to joining Masorti India." For more information about the Masorti community in India, contact Ralphy Jhirad at ralphy44@gmail.com. |
