Ambassador Colette Avital To Address MERCAZ Council in May

MERCAZ is honored that Ambassador Colette Avital, former Member of Knesset and former Israeli Consul-General in New York, will serve as the guest speaker at the biennial General Council, the MERCAZ general membership meeting, which will take place on Sunday, May 3rd at the Jewish Theological Seminary, starting at 11:00am.

Ms. Avital, a leader of the Israeli Labor Party, served in the Knesset from 1999 until last month's Israeli elections. During her ten years in the Knesset, she held a number of key positions, including Deputy Speaker of the Knesset in the 16th and 17th Knesset terms.

But it is as Consul-General in New York, from 1992 to 1996, that Amb. Avital is probably best known. Appointed after diplomatic postings in Brussels, Boston, Paris and Portugal, Ms. Avital's tenure coincided with the opening of the Oslo Peace Process, and she was a frequent speaker before the Jewish gatherings taking place in New York.

The General Council will consist of two parts: the opening public lecture starting at 11:00am, at which Ambassador Avital will speak, and the MERCAZ general membership meeting, which will be convened in the afternoon. Both programs are open to the community at no charge. However, for security purposes, advanced reservations will be necessary. Between the two public programs, MERCAZ will be holding a festive lunch at $25 per person, for which advanced payment is required.
